These are both 12 Bit samplers with the harsh Akai sound. Once added, there was some mental arithmatic needed to get the sounds to outputs, as it worked on some sorta stacking system, with slots available to outputs, then you had to stack voices to outputs etc.

(preferably FULLY expanded), cos buying more ram at new prices from Akai for these older units will cost MORE in total for the s/h unit & the ram upgrade than you might pay for a bigger more powerful sampler in the first place. If you're looking at ANY older 'S' series before the S2000, S3000XL & S3200XL, make sure the unit you buy s/h has enuff ram for your needs. In the UK it's £399 retail for the 8mb upgrade ram board !!!.SO. AND THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ANY PROSPECTIVE S/H PURCHASER.You CAN still get the RAM Boards for this series & below. THIS WAS THE LAST SERIES TO USE THE OLD AKAI SAMPLE-RAM BOARDS. The Cd version S3000 - the CD3000 comes in 1993, and the MPC3000 in 1994 upgrading from the MPC-60 to 32mb and 8 poly outs etc. there were various guises.The budget S01 - 8 note poly mono-timbrel unit was released. very effective.ġ992 now and in came the first 3000 series with a basic structure of 32mb standard expanded, 8 poly outs & stereo in/out. We continue thru to the S1100 a further 2 years later in 1990, and sometime around that 2 years from the release of the S1000 the S950 came along, keeping the 12 bit for economy but adding stuff from the S1000 OS like timestretch. & a massive (at the time) 32mb maximum ram !!!.(actually 32mb is fuck of alot for doing a dance toon!!). These upgraded the series to 16 bit, 8 poly assignable-outs instead of mono ones. Next came the S900 & Mpc60 sampler/sequencer in 1986 along with the old EW wind-Instruments.Ģ years later in '88, The S1000 was released. First came the 12 bit Akai's starting in 1984 with the S612, a simple 6 sample in ram sampler using quick-disks which evolved into the more powerful S700 and X7000 Keyboard in '85.
